Yamaha YRS-302B Baroque Soprano Recorder (Key of C)
Product description
This is a three-piece soprano recorder pitched in C and tuned to Baroque (English) fingering. The set includes head, body and foot joints that disassemble for cleaning and convenient storage.
The instrument is constructed from long-lasting ABS plastic for durability and stable intonation across a range of conditions. The body follows a Rottenburgh-style profile, designed to influence resonance and projection while keeping the lightweight advantage of synthetic material.
A defining feature is the arched windway in the head joint, which produces a gentle resistance that helps experienced players shape breath support and musical expression. Intended as a step-up model for intermediate to advanced students, it is easy to maintain and suitable as a practice or travel instrument.
Pros
- Durable ABS construction
- Arched windway for improved breath control
- Consistent tuning and bright projection
Cons
- Upper register can be a bit sharp
- Tone is brighter and less warm than wood
- Not a substitute for high-end wooden recorders
VerdictA step-up plastic soprano aimed at advancing players who want a reliable, durable instrument with thoughtful acoustics. The arched windway and Rottenburgh-inspired body shape give a tasteful resistance for nuanced breath control. It won’t replace a fine wooden instrument for tonal warmth, but it offers excellent build quality, consistent tuning and easy maintenance at a practical level.

Serviceable school instrument
Bought for my son’s class; he used it briefly and it’s still in good condition. Solid instrument, though school use was short-lived.

Surprisingly pleasant tone
I own wooden recorders and wanted a spare for travel. This has a nice tone, stays in tune across its range, and is far better than very cheap alternatives.

Great for advancing players
My first recorder; responds very well and the upper register is reachable with clarity. Bag and fit are secure. Only issue: top-octave notes can trend sharp.
